soup's on! [ 07 January 2003, 2:12 p.m. ]

so, thinking i was being all industrious and whatnot, i grabbed a can of soup off of her shelf this morning. it happened to be of the teddy bear/chicken noodle variety. a perfect lunch. or something. hell, i don't even like soup all that much. . .but i'm trying to cut back on buying lunch all the time. and, hey, you know, it's cold in here sometimes.

anyway, i take out said can of soup around 1 and notice the top is a little dusty. i wonder aloud if soup "expires". i search the label, and sure enough, it says "best if used by date on bottom of can". makes sense, right? so i turn to the bottom of the can. "DEC 97" it says. december of 97? what!? damn. i wasn't even of age then. i don't even think she LIVED around here then. did she pack up this can of soup and take it with her? it was right there on the shelf. not tucked away or anything. how could it have survived? these are questions running through my mind.

then i contemplate opening it. just to see what soup looks like after 5 years in a can. and i think. . .could it really go bad? i decided not to chance any surprises and chucked it in the trash unopened.

needless to say i'm eating lipton cup o soup. thank god i ate all those munchkins this morning to fill in the gaps.

though, somehow, i can't help but think that i have just ruined some sort of tom robbins-esque plot line.
